Cone Beam CT (CBCT) works by using a cone-shaped X-ray beam that rotates around the area being examined. It is a fast, painless imaging exam that provides high-resolution 3D images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding bone structures. It can also be used to visualize the sinuses and certain extremities, such as the wrist, hand, or foot. When is an Cone Beam CT (CBCT) used?

Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is often used in addition to conventional X-rays or ultrasound to provide three-dimensional imaging of a specific area, helping to refine the diagnosis. It is widely used for dental and sinus imaging, offering detailed images with lower radiation exposure compared to a conventional facial CT scan. 

Preparation & Procedure

1. Arrival and preparation

The patient will be asked to remove any jewelry and clothing from the area being examined. They will then be comfortably positioned according to the specific requirements of the examination to ensure optimal image quality and patient comfort.

2. Image acquisition

Image acquisition begins with a few scout (localizer) images, during which the table may move slightly to ensure optimal centering of the area of interest. The final images are then obtained during a single, short rotation of the scanner and reconstructed into high-resolution three-dimensional images.

3. After the exam

After the examination, the patient can immediately resume normal daily activities. The images are then reviewed by a radiologist, who prepares a detailed report and transmits the results to the referring physician.
