Mammography is a gentle X-ray examination of the breast and an essential tool in responsible breast cancer screening. It visualizes tissue with high resolution, detects even the smallest microcalcifications, and helps identify early changes that may indicate breast cancer or its precursors.

It is used for early breast cancer detection, clarification of breast symptoms, follow-up of known findings, and monitoring after treatment. Mammography is especially important for women over 50, when the risk of breast cancer increases.
We review symptoms, medical history and previous breast examinations to tailor the imaging to your needs.
You will be positioned at the mammography unit. The breast is placed on a support plate to ensure optimal image quality. Please do not use deodorant, body lotion, or powder on the breast or underarm area on the day of the examination, as these products may affect the images.
The breast is gently compressed for a few seconds. This improves image quality, reduces radiation and avoids overlapping structures.
Two X-ray images per breast are usually taken from different angles. Additional ultrasound may be performed if needed, especially with dense breast tissue.
You can return to normal activities. All images are double-read by two radiologists to ensure the highest diagnostic accuracy.
Compression may feel uncomfortable but lasts only seconds and ensures excellent image quality at low radiation dose. In young women or very dense breast tissue, mammography is often combined with ultrasound for optimal clarity.
Results are usually available shortly after the examination. Depending on the situation, you may receive the result the same day or through your referring physician. In screening programs, results may take a few days.
Yes. Mammography can be performed safely in women with breast implants. Special imaging techniques are used to visualize as much breast tissue as possible. Please inform the staff about your implants before the exam.
The mammography itself usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Including preparation and positioning, you should plan for a total visit time of around 15 minutes.
You may feel brief pressure during compression. Although uncomfortable, it lasts only a few seconds and is essential for sharp images and lower radiation. Most women tolerate it well.
Mammography uses low-dose X-rays. Modern systems minimize exposure while providing high-resolution images. The benefit of early breast cancer detection clearly outweighs the minimal radiation risk.
Compression fixes the breast to avoid movement, reduces overlapping tissue and lowers radiation. It also improves the detection of small calcifications that may indicate early breast cancer.
Many women benefit from an additional ultrasound, especially with dense breast tissue or if a finding needs clarification. For very young women, ultrasound is often the first-choice method.
Yes. Suspicious findings can be precisely assessed using needle biopsy or vacuum-assisted biopsy under mammographic guidance. In selected cases, an additional breast MRI may be performed before biopsy to better define the extent of a finding and to support optimal diagnostic planning. These minimally invasive procedures allow for a reliable and accurate diagnosis.
